Introduction + Design

The Chubasco Shawl is inspired by unusual symmetry, in this case by the unexpectedness of shower rains, how the sky is clear one moment, and the other, the skies are falling and everything is chaos. By combining the intricate Crossed Loops stitch with its asymmetrical shape, the Chubasco Shawl is and unexpected challenge to knit, but so rewarding.

The Chubasco Shawl features an asymmetrical shape, worked from the shortest side to the opposite corner.

Crossed loop stitch

The perfect challenge!

I’m not gonna lie, the stitch pattern used for this pattern is not particularly easy. You’ll definitely have to pay attention to your stitches, specially on the Right Side rows, where most of the action happens. HOWEVER. The stitch pattern is so beautiful and detailed! It’s completely worth the effort. Plus, once you have a few row repeats under your belt you probably won’t need to check the pattern!

The mystery is in the shape

This gorgeous shawl has an asymmetrical shape, which is not as hard as to create as one would thin. Also, it unnexpectectly begins at the shortest side and not at the corner, as most do, so it’s easy to develop the Crossed Stitch pattern. You’ll create the assymetrical shape by decreasing stitches on the left and increasing stitches on the right on a ratio 1:2.

Yarn

I chose to knit this shawl with Julie Aselin’s Leizu Worsted. It’s hand-dyed, and the quality was just what I was looking for. Incredible soft to the touch, which made it a pleasure to knit, and the color is bright and so accurate to the one deppicted on their website. You can check where to get Julie Asselin’s yarn HERE.

For this shawl you will need:

Julie Asselin Leizu Worsted worsted weight yarn (4 oz/115 g; 200 yd/185 m; 90% superwash merino/10% silk). 6 skeins. Color Echo.

Or

Approximately 24.5 oz/690 g; 1214 yds/1110 m of worsted weight yarn; 90% superwash merino/10% silk.

You can find some great options for this kind of yarn HERE on LoveCrafts (they ship worldwide).

Techniques

Back cross: skip the first st. K the second st and leave in on the needle, then purl the skipped stitch. Slip both sts from the needle together.

Front cross: skip the first st. P the second st through the back loop and leave it on the needle, then k the skipped st. Slip both sts from the needle together.

Knit 2 together: insert the needle through the front loops of the first 2 sts on the LN needle and k them together as if they were 1 st.

Make 1 Right: increase method that creates a new stitch from the strand between 2 existing stitches, which leans towards the right. To do it, insert the LN from back to front under the strand between the LN and RN, lifting the strand onto the needle. With the yarn in back, insert the RN from front to back into the front loop of the stitch. Knit it.

Slip st: slip st to the right-hand needle pwise, unless instructed otherwise.

Purl 2 together: insert the needle through the front loops of the first 2 sts on the LN and p them together as if they were 1 st.

Yarn over: bring the working yarn over your needle from front to back.

Schematics

Let’s knit!

Cast on 236 sts.

Row 1 (WS Row, set-up row): sl 1 kwise wyib. *k2, sl 2 wyif, k2, sl 1 wyif, k4, sl 1 wyif; repeat from * eighteen times more, k2, sl 2 wyif, k3.

Row 2: sl 1 pwise wyif, p2, FC, p2. *k1, p4, k1, p2, FC, p2; repeat from * eighteen times more, p1.

Begin Shaping

From now on you will shape the shawl, while working the 16-row repeat of the Crossed Loops st until row 466 as follows:

WS rows: sl 1 kwise wyib, k2tog, work the corresponding Crossed Loops st row to the last 2 sts, m1R, k1. 1 st decreased and 1 st increased, so the st count doesn’t change.

RS rows: sl 1 pwise wyif, work the corresponding Crossed Loops st row to the last 3 sts, p2tog, p1. 1 st decreased.

Note: keep in mind that as you progress on the shawl and you decrease and increase stitches at each side, you will be decreasing sts of the Crossed Loops st repeats on the right, and increasing sts to create new Crossed Loops st repeats on the left. You can follow the row by row instructions that are coming next for detailed row by row instructions on how to work the sts before they become half a Crossed Loops st repeat (6 sts) and then a complete Crossed Loops st (12 sts). However, after a while, you might start to tune into the Crossed Loops st pattern and find that you don’t need to keep checking the instructions! If that’s the case, don’t forget the selvedge st at each side, the decreases to the right (with the RS facing), and the increases to the left (with the WS facing). Find a stitich count table on the ad-free PDF, where you will find what Crossed Loops st row to work according to the Chubasco Shawl you’re working at the moment.

Row 3 (WS row): sl 1 kwise wyib, k2tog, sl 2 wyif, k2, sl 1 wyif, k4, sl 1 wyif. *k2, sl 2 wyif, k2, sl 1 wyif, k4, sl 1 wyif; repeat from * until there are 7 sts left. k2, sl 2 wyif, k2, m1R, k1.
